Shapeshifting with Satriani

The list of new music releases got a boost with the announcement that Joe Satriani’s next album, ‘Shapeshifting,’ will come out on April 10.

The new album was given a tease with the release of the first single from the LP, “Nineteen Eighty.” In a press release, Satriani spoke about the single: “It was designed to sound like my first band, the Squares. That group, dialed back the guitar solos and histrionics to try to create a cooler New Wave vibe.”

There are some influences on the single that Satriani was happy to speak of – an homage to one of his heroes, Eddie Van Halen, and even used a vintage MXR EVH phaser pedal. “I’ve always been a huge fan of Eddie. In my mind, he just crystallized that era. The late ‘70s and early ‘80s — he kind of saved rock guitar. So that’s what I would have been doing.”

The audio for “Nineteen Eighty” as well as the track listing of ‘Shapeshifting’ is available below.

Satriani rounded up a stellar group of musicians to help out on the new album, the core which features, drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Chris Chaney and keyboardist Eric Caudieux, with assistance from former Revolution keyboardist Lisa Coleman and actor Christopher Guest.

Next on the agenda for Satriani is a two-month tour of Europe beginning in mid-April. U.S. dates are expected to be announced in the near future.
