If you’re to believe the action on social media, it appears that some high-powered names are getting together to record some new music.
According to posts on various media platforms, former Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel has brought together drummer Mike Portnoy (Sons Of Apollo, ex-Dream Theater), vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill) and bassist Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance) for a new project.
Portnoy started the rumour mill flowing when on July 21 he posted a picture of the musicians, captioning it, “Look who stopped by Camp Portnoy for a day or two… hmmm, wonder what we’re up to?”
The following day, Demmel re-posted the same picture and added this comment: “Somethin’s cookin’ and it’s NOT what you think.” Demmel seems to be quite enjoying teasing the public. The hints continued earlier this week (August 5), when he posted a picture of his guitar with this caption: “10 songs tracked all rhythms last Friday on this BadAss.” He followed that with, “a soon to be announced project with Portnoy/Blitz/Menghi will be coming soon.”
Demmel also announced that he was working with producer Juan Urteaga (Testament) at Trident Studios in Pacheco, CA and that they were tracking guitars. Demmel previously worked with Urteaga on the Machine Head albums ‘Unto the Locust’ and ‘Bloodstone & Diamonds.’
This is not the first time Demmel, Portnoy, Ellsworth, and Menghi have worked together. The quartet previously performed together in Metal Allegiance, which included Menghi, Portnoy, Megadeth’s David Ellefson, and Testament’s Alex Skolnick.
