The answer might be, “why?” The question is, “Did you know that MÖTLEY CRÜE has covered Madonna’s “Like A Virgin”? The reason is, the track appears on ‘The Dirt Soundtrack’ that accompanies the upcoming Netflix film ‘The Dirt,’ which is based on the band’s best-selling 2001 autobiography by Neil Strauss.
The idea to cover the Madonna tune comes from bassist Nikki Sixx. He told Billboard came to him while he was taking a meditative stroll with his dogs. “When my mind’s open like that, these ideas pop in,” he said. Although Sixx initially felt it was “actually a really horrible idea” to cover the song, he told producer Bob Rock about it, and Rock replied: “Yeah, I don’t know. Good luck!”
Apparently Sixx impressed Rock and drummer Tommy Lee with a rough demo he had cut. The band then completely reworked the track but left the lyrics intact. (“It was weird to hear Vince [Neil] singing, ‘I’m like a virgin,'” he admitted). Sixx said that the band, specifically guitarist Mick Mars, added his own touch: “There’s a part of the song that Mick does a thing, and it’s a bit of a nod to Metallica because when Metallica heard the ‘Dr. Feelgood’ album, they used Bob Rock to make their ‘Black Album.’ So, Sixx said, “It’s kind of a nod back to those guys because we were workin’ with Bob again.” So has Madonna heard the MÖTLEY recording the cover? Sixx said, “She will soon, I imagine. Maybe we can get her in the video.”
The 18-song soundtrack is due for release on March 22nd. It features most of the well-know MÖTLEY tunes such as “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Kickstart My Heart.” Exclusive to the soundtrack are four new songs featuring the single, “The Dirt (Est. 1981) (feat. Machine Gun Kelly),” “Ride With The Devil,” “Crash And Burn” and “Like A Virgin.”
