Corey Taylor experiences surreal moment

Last July during a concert in Holmdel, NJ, Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor got to live a dream. Speaking with Wisconsin radio station 102.9 The Hog, Taylor reminisced about being joined on stage by his then-14-year-old son Griffin, to sing the band’s hit single “Song #3.” The video can be seen below.

Corey Taylor said that the experience was “surreal,” emphasizing that this was not a rehearsed gimmick. “First of all, he’s a natural. He’d never done anything like that before. We didn’t even practice on stage with him, but he and I went through it acoustically backstage.”

Taylor spoke about the energy in the performance. “For sure he could lean back on the adrenaline and fall in the pocket, but note-wise, he was so dialed in on it. And then had the presence of mind to be running around stage, going for it, and then at the end, he jumps up and takes a selfie with the audience. I would have never in a million years thought to do that.

The moment, as Taylor said, was an emotional experience, “A million things are going through my head. I’m seeing him as a kid, I’m seeing him on his first day at school, I’m seeing him struggle with just trying to figure out who he is and stuff, and then all of a sudden — boom! — and there he is. And I’m like, ‘Wow! I’d never felt that kind of pride in my life, man'”

Taylor was asked whether Griffin has always been interested in music. He replied, “When he was really young, he wanted to be a florist. And then he was just, like, ‘Well, dad, I’m just gonna be a professional gamer.’ And I was, like, ‘Are ya? And then he realized there’s actual work [involved] and a lot of those gamers are actually programmers as well. And I’m, like, ‘That means college.’ And he was, like, ‘Ugh.’ My son’s not the biggest fan of school.”

Speaking in an interview a few years earlier, Taylor acknowledged that his son has always had an “an incredible ear for singing.” He went on to say that if his son did decide to eventually become a musician, he would support him “wholeheartedly.” Looks like the stage has been set for Griffin Taylor.
