Why mess with a good thing? Following up on the chart success of ‘Black to Blues,’ which was released in 2017 and hit Number 1 on Billboard’s Blues charts, Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry are returning with another tribute to their blues heroes: ‘Black To Blues Volume 2,’ an EP which will be released on October 18. The band has also released a video for the Robert Johnson track “Me And The Devil Blues,” which can be seen via the link below.
The official statement about the tune reads, “We chose this song because we have such an appreciation for Robert Johnson and his music. It was so simple, direct, and eerie in a way that just resonates with the listener. Since Robert‘s music was guitar and vocal, we decided to totally write new music and lay his words on top of it. All of the music was written literally on the spot while recording in the studio! We are very proud of how this track came out!”
Lead vocalist Chris Robertson said: “We could have never dreamed of the positive reaction we got from the first album. We took on some of our biggest influences in music, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear and feel how much fun we had recording this project!”
The second Blues installment was produced by the band themselves. The EP kicks off with a cover of Freddie King‘s “Big Legged Woman.” It sets a perfect tone for what’s to come, with the band’s own
Guitarist Ben Wells spoke about the influences of King and Howlin’ Wolf: “We always identify with those guys ‘cause they had grooves and riffs like we would put in our tunes. So we are naturally drawn to that.” He added, “Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Howlin’ Wolf, and the like, we used to listen to that constantly growing up, and still do. It’s the DNA of what our band is. It’s not just us covering songs. It’s about doing our own version of each song.”
Since the release of ‘Black to Blues,’ the band found time to release its studio album ‘Family Tree’ (2018), which made Billboard’s Top 10 Hard Rock albums chart and also climbed into the Top 10 U.K. album chart. The past year was spent extensively touring through Europe including a sub-headline performance at Download festival under Guns N’ Roses. They have also made their way across the US, touring with (among others), Gov’t Mule, Three Doors Down and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Black Stone Cherry will be going back to Europe to support Alice Cooper in September, as well as playing shows in the U.S. with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Lacs before heading over to Australia with Halestorm.
